simple hair accessory organizer

Jan 18

the title of my blog says it all, but in case you didn’t notice i am all about being simply organized. i keep my organization style simple and easy whenever i can – and preferably low cost, as well! today i’m going to share with you how i created a simple and easy hair accessory organizer – and it cost me less than $10!

our 3rd child is a girl and she’ll be 2 later this month. we absolutely LOVE having a little girl. especially after having 2 crazy and energetic little boys. she has added just the right balance to our family and completes the entire picture. little girls are so much fun – especially when they are girly. she loves to hang with the big boys in the house, but deep down she loves all things girl – dolls, dress-up, babies, performing….and now that she actually has some hair, she loves to have her hair put into clips and pony-tails.

i have to admit – secretly i always dreamed for a little girl of my own. now that i have one, i love playing with her hair! although, i have found keeping track of her hair accessories to be a bit challenging. since she doesn’t have tons of hair, we are working with very tiny clips and those thin, teensy clear rubber bands. all of her hair accessories get lost in the house over the course of the day. they even randomly show up in the car. it doesn’t surprise me though because i didn’t exactly have a designated area for “all things hair”.

my old system was this….

see that little white drawer organizer on the left with the hair accessories inside? and there sits her hair brush in the bottom of the drawer. this was ok for a little while because it’s easily accessible when i get her ready in the morning on the changing table, which is directly above that drawer. but it wasn’t easy digging through that small bin to find those tiny rubber bands. additionally, the back of the drawer is pretty dark in the morning, so i would fumble through the bin quickly hoping to find what i needed…and sometimes even dump the whole bin into the drawer out of frustration.

haha!

once i decided this project needed attention, i gave myself a few weeks to look around and think about how i wanted to improve the situation. over the years i have seen several cute hair accessory organizers. i love this idea…

or this…
the wall directly above her dresser/changing table is in dire need of some artwork. i thought if i found a great piece of art to put in the middle of the wall, and hung a smaller hair accessory organizer (like those above) to either side of it – that would be great. it would definitely add a little *something more* to her bland room.
but as i said, she doesn’t have enough hair quite yet for those huge bows. and what would i do to solve the tiny rubber band issue? those solutions above would work for someone if they only had clips – but what about rubber bands and other accessories that don’t “clip”?
the ultimate goal was to find a solution that would house ALL of her hair accessories in ONE place.
low and behold, i found the perfect solution at target – of course, right?! when i was in the home section of the store, i found this…

{you’ll remember i have one of these hanging in my own closet – but i use mine for jewelry.}

so i grabbed the organizer (for $7!) along with these command adhesive hooks…

instead of hanging the organizer in her closet, which is a good distance from her changing table, i thought the perfect spot would be on the back side of her bedroom door….so, i placed the adhesive hook…

and tested the length of the organizer = perfect!

then i sorted through all of her hair accessories and threw out anything that looked worn. the other day i grabbed her some of these fun new clips for day to day wear….

she also has bows and flowers with metal clips on the back…

rubber bands with flowers…

and hair hands with little confetti curls…

next, i grabbed an old pill box organizer and sorted through her teeny tiny rubber bands….

the lids will for sure keep these from scattering!…

finally, i set to work putting all of the hair accessories into the organizer. here was the final result!…

i sorted all of the clips and rubber bands by color and placed them inside the pockets. instead of putting the bigger clips inside the pockets, i clipped them to the outside for ease of grabbing…

there’s even a spot at the bottom for headbands and her hairbrush…

i put the tiny rubber bands at the top, which means there is no chance she or the boys will get any big ideas…

once the job was done, i stood back and thought this could really do the trick! everything is in one place. sure, i can’t keep her from tearing her hair apart and losing hair clips every day…but at least when i track them down, they have a place to live in our home – and that place makes sense.

OH – bonus! since the organizer is 2-sided, i gathered up 2 adorable sets of jewelry she received as Christmas gifts…

and placed those inside the pockets on the back side…

little did i know i was accomplishing 2 projects in 1 – yay!

once the job was finished, i opened the door to make sure there wouldn’t be an issue with it hanging back there – nope! it’s perfectly flush with the wall.

yet another positive – i have more room in her diaper drawer…

this project was so simple and easy – and i was excited to cross it off my list because it was an issue that was staring me in the face each and every morning!

do you have a little girl with hair accessories? i’d love for you to share your tried and true ideas in the comments section!

This is a great idea. My daughter (almost 4) has hair accessories in 3 different places, and it drives me nuts! I think I'm going to try this. Maybe tonight.

Yours is the first DIY hair accessory organiser that I’ve seen accommodate the hair brush! We too have a little girl, and the all encompassing hair accessories…so we came up with this. http://www.thehairhelper.co.uk

Neat. May I ask where you purchase the pill box? I can never find a clear, unmarked and deep enough container like the one you featured. Thank you in advance for the information.

I'd Love To Hear From You!
