it’s the little things – day 3

Jun 6

day 3? already?
welcome back to my week of little things organization! if you missed the previous days, here is day 1 and day 2. also, don’t forget to enter this week’s giveaway!
today i am working on a few small organization jobs in our master bathroom and master closet. like everything else this week, these are the little things that have been annoying me for months. and it feels so good to get them knocked off the to-do list! have you been completing any little organization projects along with me this week? if so, share in the comments section!
a few weeks ago i moved all of our towels from our toilet room cabinet to a shelf in our main bathroom area…
with the towels now out of this space, it created some much needed room in the cabinet – specifically for my stockpile of bathroom/beauty products…
i’ve since done a little work in the cabinet, and thought i would share a sneak peek. i still have plans to outfit the cabinet with pretty baskets. for now, i’m happy to have the extra stockpile space 🙂
here is what the cabinet looks like now…
go ahead – scroll back up to see the before! i like doing that too ;-).
yes, all of the stuff in the before picture is the same as in the after picture. amazing how much was crammed in. the shelves are deceptively deep.
i am so pleased with how nicely this cabinet is coming together. but i specifically love 2 little organization tools that have made it *that* much better.
this set of 3 small plastic square drawer organizers can be found at the dollar store for $1…

that’s right – 3 of them for $1! i like that you can use them separately or attach all 3 (or more) together…

when i found these, i knew exactly what little thing i would store away inside of them.

in the bathroom cabinet, i have a stockpile of tampons. some of the boxes are unopened, but a few are open and were beginning to annoy me. i tend to buy packs of tampons that come in various “sizes”…

sorry to chat about this topic in here…men, look away if necessary.

most months i only need a few heavy, and then i move on to medium and then move on to light. since periods aren’t perfect, and i need various sizes, i had several opened boxes inside the cabinet. when it was time to get one, i would have to dig around in all of them in order to find the size i needed.

so, check this out…

did you ever think tampons could look so pretty?…

i took it a small step further…

now there is no question as to which tampon is which – the print on the package is so small. i just printed a simple label with my label maker…

since i bought 2 packages of the plastic organizers, i added 1 additional for panty liners…

i love this…

the other little solution i am in love with…the container store sells this adorable glass jar for $6.99…

target and walmart sell a similar jar, i believe. the container store sells the jar in 3 sizes, the one above is the largest of the set – 1 gallon.

when i saw the jar i knew exactly what would look pretty inside…

soap!

over the few months i’ve been blogging, i have learned something about myself. i am not a fan of packaging. i love to find new and different ways to contain items so they are pleasing to look at. soap boxes are one of those annoying packages, i guess. i went through our stockpile of bar soap, took them out of the individual boxes and popped them inside the jar.

the only reason i kept the thin wrapper on the bars of ivory soap…these pretty quotes…

i love this one…

exactly! the genius (and beauty) is always in the simple things – at least for me. 🙂

here is where that pretty jar of soap is now…

(note to self: we do not need any body wash – do not buy more. even if you can get it for $.84 with a coupon.)

as for the other 4 shelves in the cabinet? here they are…

(additional note to self: no more toothpaste!)
my other little things area today is on my husband’s side of the closet. his sock drawer was getting a bit out of hand, so i grabbed one of these sock organizers from the container store

but sadly, sometimes a solution or product you think will work – doesn’t. and that’s ok!

turns out my husband could fit more socks inside this drawer than with the sock organizer. instead, we rolled them so they are easy to find. the drawer can accommodate more socks when you roll them…

rolling clothing also works well for t-shirts! this was my husband’s t-shirt drawer last week…

doesn’t look bad, i know. but it doesn’t look good after he has been digging around in there searching for a t-shirt. when i put the laundry away, the drawer looks like the above photo. but the next time i’m in there, the shirts have moved around quite a bit. so i re-fold and make it look nice again.

but now…

with the t-shirts rolled he can see exactly what he has available to wear. which in the above photo doesn’t seem to be much…i better get on that laundry pile. stat.
those 2 drawers look so much better with the clothing rolled up. if you are having an issue getting your clothing to fit nicely inside a drawer or you can’t find what you are looking for inside a drawer, try the rolling method!
that’s it for today! i hope you are enjoying this series as much as i have enjoyed putting it together!

It may sound funny, but I find being organized to be very freeing. You know exactly where everything is when you need it. Looks like you're really good at that.

  12. I love the idea of rolling the clothes- especially the tshirts! I'm definitely giving this a try! 🙂 thank you!

    • hi there!

thank you and you're very welcome! the rolled shirts are working reeeeeeally well – he can really see what shirts he has available to wear…instead of mussing up the entire drawer 🙂 and the socks have been working well too! let me know how it works for you!

i've also heard you should pack your suitcase by rolling clothing – that is saves space. ?? have never tried, but it's worth it! 🙂

      xo,

Thanks for sharing some very good ideas! Right now I'm trying to plan out a revamp of our bathroom linen cabinet. It's a huge space, floor to ceiling, but the shelves are about 20" square, which makes for some hard-to-reach areas. I'm busy plotting & planning & gathering plastic bins & baskets. I really like some of your ideas.
    CAS

    • Hi CAS,

thank you so much for stopping by and am so glad to hear some of my ideas may work in your bathroom. come back to share when you're all done!

      xo,
      samantha 🙂

  15. Love the soap idea!!! I liked it so much that I did it with all of our beautiful hotel soaps! Then, I extended the idea to hotel 1.) shampoos 2.) conditioners 3.) lotions 4.) body washes. I put each of the items in cylinder vases that were the same height. They looked so pretty that I put them on the ledge of our bathtub (which can be hidden, if desired, by closing our shower curtain). By doing this, I made my bathroom prettier & gained a drawer!!!

  16. Simply LKJ says:

Love all your organization!! I love to keep bars of soap in a pretty glass jar on the side of our garden tub. Came over from Sarah's, looking forward to following along.
