Simple Solution: DVD Organization

Mar 8

Previously I shared my original DVD consolidation projectΒ hereΒ and was more than happy with the result. I’veΒ loved the discovery of Atlantic dvd sleeves. Investing in the sleeves not only allowed us to rid ourselves of hundreds of bulky plastic dvd cases, it also allowed meΒ the ability ofΒ streamliningΒ the collection to 2 very small dvd baskets; one for kid movies and one for adult movies…
Then, I created a divider system out of manilla folders and washi tape…
All was well and the dividers were holding up nicely….that is, until recently when I noticedΒ this…

The kids can easily locate a movie to watch by thumbing through the dividers, but the washi tape was beginning to peel away from the divider itself…

Not going to fly or last very long. Time to solve it! I grabbed some large laminating pouches from Walmart (I have a Scotch brand laminator) and was able to laminate 2 dividers per sheet…

I tried the 5×7 laminating sheets, but they were too small. The 8.5″ x 11″ pouches worked well…

For additional prettiness, before laminating I added a second strip of washi. Love it!…

Now that the dividers are laminated, they should will last forever…

Here they are sitting pretty on a shelf in the office…

Didn’t take long to make this little tweak – about 30 minutes this morning.

If you have an overflowing DVD collection with limited storage space, this is definitely aΒ solution my friends! Have a great day!

  1. Looks great Sam! I just finished up doing this with our CD collection this week thanks to your previous post! πŸ™‚ I used the Atlantic sleeves as well. I just made dividers according to genre- classical, soundtracks, etc. πŸ™‚ I didn't laminate them, but may at some point if I have the time.

Thanks again for giving me a reason to use up those manilla folders, haha! πŸ˜€ And the washi tape makes them look pretty!

  2. Love this idea! It's pretty AND functional. How in the world did we survive before at-home lamination?!

    • great! so glad you like!

i know! and i only recently invested in a laminator. for years i went without one – even with having kids for 8 years. i love this little scotch version i grabbed from target. nothing fancy but it gets the job done – and then some.

      thanks again!

Stopping by from the TT&J link up.. Hope you're having a wonderful evening!

    • Hi! Thank you so much for the sweet comment and follow! So nice to have you here reading along with me. πŸ™‚

They are pretty and organized – love it that way!!! Hope you'll try this with your dvd's. so nice to get rid of those clunky plastic cases that take up so much space.

      Have a great night!

      Best,
      Sam πŸ™‚

  5. Loved this idea the first time I saw it and love it more with the wearability of it!
    Hugs

  6. I love my scotch laminator! Your dvd storage looks good, as soon as I work up the nerve I will tackle ours. πŸ™‚

    • Yes, this little scotch laminator has helped me out on so many occasions. Just the right size too πŸ™‚

Do this project! You will love it and wonder how you loved without it. πŸ™‚

      Best,
      Sam

  7. These are great! I like how simple it is. I need to tackle our CD/DVD mess but it's such a big job! This is motivating me… πŸ™‚

  8. Thank you for the idea(s)…since I pinned from start to finish. I'm creating a new entertainment center from a dresser and may just have to use your method. I may tweak it to fit in a drawer, but it will eliminate the need for more than one drawer of DVD's. It's awesome when someone else does the work and I can benefit…so thank you SOOO much!!!

I was linked to the post from another blog, so pardon the late comment, but I am in the SAME situation with DVDs as you were when you started this post, and I absolutely LOVE this solution.

To be honest, I think ours might be worse–our main "adult" DVD Case Logic case that zips all the way around. It is so heavy that there are times that I think about getting a movie out and I CHANGE MY MIND because it is too much of a hassle.

I love that your solution is simple to use and maintain (what a hassle keeping things alphabetized in our giant cases)!!

    • hi!

i am so glad this idea may be helpful for you – it has really worked for us! it is very simple and easy, but if you have kiddos i would consider separating out your movies. otherwise the kids will be digging through your adult selection and muss them up a bit. i don't mind the kids digging around in their own little bin of movies…it's super easy for me to put them back into each letter section….but otherwise, it has been so simple compared to finding a place to stow away all of those plastic dvd cases.

thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a comment!

Thank you Samantha! I needed an idea for organizers between each DVD (I just organized my DVD's like this). I am going to buy some washi tape (for the first time ever) and create these. We have a teacher store with affordable laminating, so I'll just use them. I'm obsessed with your blog and all the tips!

Would this work to laminate dividers for an 8 1/2 x11 in. planner? Never laminated anything, is it easy?

    • Laminating is SUPER EASY! I have a simple scotch brand laminator and they sell all sorts of various sized sheets. It's a matter of just warming up the machine and then sliding the page through. Very very easy! I think it should work great to laminate something for the inside of a planner that is that size. However, you may want to think about how to tab it. ??

Do the dvd’s get scratched at all being in sleeves? Great idea!

  13. Sophan says:

where do you get the plastic sleeves for the DVD’s?

What is washi tape and where can I find it? Like the idea and would love to try it on my dvds.

  15. Carly says:

    Where are the baskets from?
