Organized Travel: Toiletry Bags

Mar 26

Since returning a few days ago from spring break vacation, it’s a good time to share my organized travel bags. With many of you getting ready for spring break travel of your own, I hope these tips will be helpful. There will be many more traveling tips coming along so stay tuned for those!

We travel a few times a year, so having a variety of bags on hand is helpful. Sometimes the trip is shorter and requires only a few things. Other times the trip is longer. And sometimes it’s only me traveling alone or with 1 or 2 of the kids. In any event, I like having a variety to choose from….

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience.

really try to pack only what I need. But I’m a girl – so let’s face it….that’s tough to do! Plus, for those traveling with children, we know all too well that moments occur when we need medicine or band-aid’s or a button falls off the only pair of shorts you brought for your 6 year old.

Talking hypothetically, of course. #coughcough

Sooo, because I’m a planner, I do travel prepared for most incidents….But keep it to small quantities.

And that is exactly my first tip when it comes to travel toiletries – it doesn’t cost a lot of money to purchase a few travel-size bottles. These are especially cute!…

That means you can still bring your favorite shampoo and conditioner that isn’t available in travel-size. But you’re not packing the original sized bottle sitting in your shower.

Here is the inside of one of my toiletry bags from a recent trip…

You can see in the top section I’ve been able to locate travel-sizes of some of my faves…

Pictured above: Toothpaste, floss, calming body wash, hydrating mask, eye cream, argan hair oil, latisse and my toothbrush. Yes, this pocket is a perfect example that I can still travel with a lot of items because they are tiny and take up only a small amount of space. But when it comes to the products that don’t come in travel sizes and I can’t live without them, I use empty plastic travel bottles. I found these in the sample / travel-size aisle at Target…

Just a few dollars saves me a ton of luggage space. I simply slap a label on each bottle so I’m not washing my face with shampoo. 🙂

(In my travel experience, if the label gets wet over and over…You’ll need to replace it. No big deal though.)

A peek at the middle section…

Pictured above: Sample size body lotion, sample size aquaphor, travel size sewing kit, q-tips, travel size lint roller, deodorant and a tide spot pen. Again, a lot of toiletry travel storage bang for my buck!

When it comes to the toiletry bag itself, I like a bag with a lot of pockets as well as at least one pocket that contain any liquid spills. Nothing worse than arriving at your destination to find your clothing soaked in mouthwash. Not talking from experience, of course. And I love love having a bag that can hang at my destination too…

Most hotels and homes we stay in don’t have a lot of bathroom counter space. I love to hang my products to easily see and grab what’s needed. This bag comes with a built-in hook for doing exactly that…

Remember, I am a girl…so that one bag above won’t do. Here is my second bag that contains additional supplies and make-up…

And it hangs too!…

When it comes to the kids, I operate pretty much the same way. All 3 share 1 bag….

At this age, the kids don’t need much in the toiletry department. But because most of their items are wet, I like using a bag that will contain any spills during travel. I also like this bag, in particular, because the middle section has 2 zippered pouches that can be removed…

Anytime we travel, we bring a first-aid bag. Since we were doing a variety of activities on spring break, I came prepared for everything – but again, kept it to smaller sizes…

Pictured above: diaper ointment, vitamins, adult pain meds, antibiotic ointment, aloe vera, kids pepto, kids pain meds, burn ointment, antibacterial wipes and more. I know a drug store is never too far from where I’m staying, but don’t the issues pop up at the most inconvenient times? 2am, anyone? I like to be prepared! 🙂

Other tips…

I love these Hefty Travel Bags….

These are the perfect size for walking through security. When I travel, I put all of my purse liquids (gloss, hand sanitizer, etc) into one of these. That way when we get to security I can pop it out and into the x-ray basket. No one likes to hear the huffing and puffing of a traveler waiting in line behind you at security as you fish through your purse for that tiny bottle of bobbi brown lipgloss.

Like most organization product I purchase, I appreciate it when it has more than one feature. Like this razor…

It not only keeps my razor contained and from getting all wet and goopy in the shower, but inside it stores away extra blades and a shower hanger…

Finally, when we travel to a location where we have access to laundry or a dishwasher, I bring my own products. To prevent leaks, I pack these in a sandwich size ziploc and then double bag it in a quart size, double zipper bag…

Packed and ready to go…

Streamlined, easy packing, easy unloading at our destination and easy to find what we need.

Hope you enjoyed! Have a great day!

great tips! on travel i usually wind up bringing all of those samples i get from shopping at sephora instead of packing small bottles of my favorites. they're tiny, disposable and makes travel kind of like a fun spa trip. unless you're traveling to a spa, then it might be too much product. lol

I would love to know where you got the hanging storage bags themselves. They are awesome.

    • I found one similar to the first one at Target.

    • thank you so much! all of the above bags were purchased over the years at target. they are in the beauty aisle with the make-up. the pink one was purchased years ago and am not sure if they carry it any longer. the black/teal bags were purchased within the last year and may still be available. target has a great variety and most of them come packed with the plastic bottles for filling with your products. 🙂

      hope that helps you!

Great tips. You have to travel light flying for sure. It makes so much sense to plan ahead.

It makes a lot of sense to plan ahead! You’re right – traveling by plane just isn’t as “friendly” anymore in terms of what you can bring with you.

      2. Back Right: weekender bag with the handle is this one.
      3. Front Left: is what’s called a train case and here’s a similar one.
