Today I’ve teamed up with Tali Wee of Zillow to share some great storage solutions for small bedrooms. I’m sure most of you have heard of Zillow, right? If you aren’t familiar with Zillow, it’s an invaluable tool / resource!

Zillow’s app was super helpful to me during my home search here in the SF Bay Area. And it’s sorta fun to drive through random neighborhoods and find out what the homes are selling for (or renting for), finding out what the square footage is, and tons of other details…all by clicking through their super easy to use app. Essentially, the app allowed me to be a little stalker without anyone knowing. No need to get out of my car, knock on someone’s door, and ask how much they bought their house for.

Sshhhh…Ha!

Joking aside, Zillow clearly has their finger on the home and real estate marketplace. So it’s no surprise they are also a great resource for home tips. Organization included! And you guys know that is my fav topic! I love the Zillow’s new Digs site too! Today I’m teaming up with Tali to share some great ideas for those of you with small bedrooms.

Many people choose to live in small spaces due to budget constraints or they have simply chosen to live in a smaller home. While our society feels that “bigger is better”, there are definitely benefits to living in a smaller home; lower monthly rental payments, less expensive property taxes, and more. As a single person or small family, a compact apartment or ranch-style home might be a good option. However, organizing in small spaces can be difficult. Even in an otherwise large home, placing furniture and storage pieces in a small bedroom creates a chaotic atmosphere.

These days, there are so many options (and inspiration!) to consider to increase open floor space and organization. We’ve gathered a few here to inspire those of you with small bedrooms.

 

For a classic, customized look, consider built-in shelves. Shelving is a practical yet stylish option for showcasing books, decor, jewelry and small items. Professionally installed shelving isn’t the most cost-efficient option, but there are hundreds (maybe even thousands) of tutorials available online for creating your own built-in shelving. With some patience and the right materials, DIY built-ins are a great way to increase organization without the high price tag.

Additionally, a special fixture such as built-in shelving is attractive to those searching for a new home and therefore can help decrease the amount of time a home sits on the market. If you selling your home is in your future plans, don’t forget to consider that increase to your resale value.

Multi-purpose furniture increases functionality in bedrooms lacking the space for separate pieces. For studio apartments, consider a pull-out sofa or a convertible bunk bed. Day beds are a great option for small children’s rooms that are also doubling as play spaces.

It’s a full length mirror and a jewelry organizer!…

Purchase or DIY a hollow ottoman to hold blankets and throw pillows. Hiding stacks of linens and accessories keeps a bedroom looking organized and larger, as there is less mess to absorb the space. Install drawers under the bottom of a bed for easy clothing storage. For even trickier storage, consider utilizing the space just under the floorboards. This is a more intensive project that may require a professional plan.

Everyone knows that making use of vertical space is one of the best ways to maximize your organization options. All you need to do is google “hanging organization” and a bajillion ideas will pop up. It really is a smart way to go!

Use closet space to create hanging shoe racks or purse holders. Rather than letting accessories clutter the floor of a closet, hang them up and away to increase accessibility and to keep the floor space open for other items. Consider repurposing and painting and old ladder to lean against a wall for hanging necklaces, scarves, blankets, and more.

 

Place bins on top of each other, utilizing top-to-bottom wall space. Stacking frees up floor space for other necessary furnishings. Storage bins don’t have to be unsightly! Cover plastic bins with fabric to match your bedroom style. Covered bins create consistency in the design of the bedroom.

I love this idea! Someone covered a bookshelf in curtain fabric and they are using it at the foot of their bed for storage – yet it’s so pretty!…
